Sustainability at SCANDIC DATA
Introduction
This overview summarizes SCANDIC DATA's sustainability strategy within the SCANDIC GROUP. As an operator of a state-of-the-art data center, we are aware of the environmental and social impact of our infrastructure. Our goal is to combine high-performance cloud and hosting services with responsible business models, minimize energy consumption, use renewable energy and ensure fair working conditions in the supply chain.

1. climate targets and energy efficiency
Operating a data center is energy-intensive. SCANDIC DATA has set itself ambitious goals:
– Net-Zero Scope 1 & 2 until 2027: We will cover our direct and indirect energy consumption entirely with renewable energy and offset any remaining emissions. Our PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) should permanently be ≤ 1.25.
– Net-Zero Scope 3 until 2030/2035: We work with our suppliers to reduce emissions in the upstream supply chain (hardware production, transportation). We give preference to suppliers with clear climate targets and environmental certifications.
– Transparency: We calculate the energy consumption and CO₂ emissions at rack and customer level.internal level. This data is published in dashboards and reports so that customers canunderstand the climate impact of their services. - Renewable energy: Our data center in Bahrain is powered entirely by renewable energy. We invest in solar systems, battery storage and purchase certified green electricity. Surplus waste heat is used for neighboring buildings.
– Efficient hardware and software: We use energy-efficient servers, GPUs and TPUs. Virtualization and containerization increase capacity utilization. Software optimization reduces idle performance.
2. data protection and information security
Sustainability includes the protection of personal and business data. All data is subject to strict data protection rules (GDPR, PDPL). We implement Privacy-by-Design and Privacy-by-default in our products and services, carry out regular data protection impact assessments and implement a data protection Zero Trust Architecture with strong encryption and SIEM/SOAR systems. Responsible data processing is a basic prerequisite for maintaining customer trust and using resources efficiently. Secure processes also prevent energy being wasted through inefficient or repeated data transfers.
3. supply chain and human rights
SCANDIC DATA's supply chain ranges from semiconductor manufacturers and server producers to electricity and cooling system providers to logistics and waste disposal companies. We fulfill the requirements of the German Supply Chain Duty of Care Act (LkSG) and the EU CSDD:
– Supplier Code of Conduct: Our contractual partners undertake to comply with labor law standards, to pay fair wages, to prohibit child and forced labor and to protect the environment. - Risk Assessments: We identify high-risk areas - such as the procurement of raw materials (rare earths, metals), the manufacture of components and the disposal of electronic waste - and carry out audits. - Complaints mechanisms: An anonymous reporting channel is available for employees, suppliers and customers to report human rights violations and environmental problems. Reports are investigated and action is taken. - Circular economy: We promote the reuse and recycling of hardware. Old devices are disposed of by certified recycling companies and we use modular systems to extend upgrade cycles.
4 AI ethics and media ethics
SCANDIC DATA uses AI-supported systems to optimize operations and energy consumption. These systems are subject to the SCANDIC GROUP's AI ethics guidelines:
– Transparency & explainability: AI-supported analyses (e.g. predictive maintenance, load forecasts) are identified to customers. We explain how recommendations are made. - Fairness & inclusion: Algorithms are checked for bias. No customer should be disadvantaged on the basis of origin, size or sector. - Safety & robustness: AI systems are hardened against manipulation (prompt injection, adversarial attacks) and regularly audited. - Data protection: Training data is only used in compliance with the GDPR and PDPL; data is anonymized or pseudonymized where possible.
Editorial independence, fact-checking and advertising transparency apply in the SCANDIC GROUP's media sector. AI-generated content is labeled and users have the right to a human contact person.
5 Governance and compliance
At management level, there is an ESG committee that manages climate, human rights, data/AI and social issues. A policy library includes the Code of Conduct, Supplier Code, Environmental Policy, Human Rights Policy, Modern Slavery Statement and Disclosure Guidelines. Our ESG risk inventory identifies potential sustainability risks in all business areas. Heat maps and threshold values help with management. Reporting obligations are fulfilled by means of an annual ESG report and separate CO₂ reports.
6. environment and climate in the data center
SCANDIC DATA operates its data centers with renewable energy and pursues a zero-waste concept:
– Heat recovery: Waste heat is used for neighboring buildings or district heating networks. Cooling water is reused and treated.
– Efficient cooling: We rely on adiabatic cooling, free cooling and hot/cold aisle containment to minimize energy consumption.
– Modularity: Our infrastructure has a modular structure so that it can be adapted to requirements and there is no unnecessary overcapacity.
– Sustainable procurement: When purchasing hardware and building materials, we pay attention to environmental certificates (e.g. FSC, Energy Star) and the origin of the raw materials.
– Waste management: Electronic waste, batteries and coolants are professionally recycled. Office waste is collected separately; paper consumption is reduced through digital processes.
7 Employees and work culture
Our employees are crucial for a sustainable transformation. SCANDIC DATA promotes diversity, equality and inclusion. Equal pay audits, flexible working models and programs for physical and mental health are firmly anchored. Regular training courses on compliance, human rights, data protection, sustainability and AI ethics raise awareness of responsible behavior. We promote internal mobility and offer training programs on future-oriented technologies.
8. stakeholder dialog and social contribution
We maintain an open dialog with our customers, suppliers, employees, authorities and civil society. Feedback is incorporated into the further development of our sustainability strategy. SCANDIC DATA supports educational and charitable projects, promotes digital participation and is involved in associations for sustainable digitalization. Our responsibility does not end with the provision of infrastructure: we are committed to a more climate-friendly future for IT and a more resilient digital society.
